Activities in La Gomera
In 2024, La Gomera had many activities that combined family fun and horror shows for Halloween. In San Sebastián de la Gomera, the Torre del Conde Park hosted the “Terror in the Park” theme night, with workshops, fantasy characters, horror shows, professional make-up, sweets and virtual reality experiences.
In Agulo activities were organised for the whole family, including masquerade workshops and candy bags, and on 31 October children went around the village trick-or treating for sweets, while in the afternoon they enjoyed “The adventure of the spooky mysteries” in the municipal field.
In Valle Gran Rey, the programme in Puerto de Vueltas offered a children’s “Trick or Treat” party with workshops and bouncy castles, a children’s fancy dress competition and a tunnel of terror for those over 11, while adults could enjoy a night-time party with DJs, music and prizes for the best Halloween costume.
Native traditions: Los Finaos
In addition to the modern festivities of Halloween, La Gomera preserves Indigenous traditions that enrich the local culture. One of the most outstanding is Los Finaos, a celebration that takes place on the night of 31 October, coinciding with the eve of All Saints’ Day. This festivity has its roots in the ancient funeral customs of the Canary Islands, and its main objective is to honour deceased loved ones.
On this night, various activities are carried out, such as the “enrame de papel picado“, the “Pan por Dios” and the making of the “Santitos“. The “enrame de papel picado” is a custom that dates back to the 17th century, and consists in placing basil, rosemary, beech or palm tree branches in the temples and in the places where the procession passes through on this day. Nowadays, chopped tissue paper is also used in different sizes and colours.
The Finaos are an occasion to gather around the memory of loved ones who are no longer with us and are a sign of the deep respect and affection that the community of La Gomera has for its traditions and history.
Customs and traditions
On the evening of 31 October, families gather to share typical foods such as roasted chestnuts, nuts, figs and seasonal fruits. Traditional sweets such as fritters, egg bread and pasties (empanadas) are made. Houses are decorated with palm leaves and altars are placed in honour of the deceased, creating an atmosphere of meditation and celebration.
For those who wish to immerse themselves in this unique celebration, Hotel Jardín Tecina features a privileged location in La Gomera, surrounded by nature and close to the main centres where these Halloween festivities are celebrated.
